Saving money

One of the challenges of being away on this sabbatical is convincing Indigo that we're not on holiday and therefore she can't have ice cream every day! This week she decided that she wanted to give up ice cream in order to save money to buy a Playmobil set she had her eye on.

We bought the Playmobil set and couldn't resist giving it to her immediately but she still managed to go the full 7 days without an ice cream. The reasoning of delayed gratification could be similar to that observed by Stanford Professor Walter Mischel in these experiments.

However we gave her the set before she had to give up ice cream for 7 days. Despite my fear that day 2 she would say it wasn't fair and she should have an ice cream anyway, she was the first to remember that she couldn't. She seemed to get some real gratification from the sacrifice (and from the amazing ice cream below on the 8th day!)
